Dark green, lacy fronds and burgundy stems nicely compliments other shade garden plants especially those with dark leaves. Hardy and long-lived. The burgundy in the stems can take a couple years to develop.

Care:

One of the oldest plants on the planet, ferns are unmatched in the perennial shade garden. Though they may appear delicate ferns are actually tough, adaptable plants. Athyrium grows best in moist soil with a neutral to moderately acidic pH. Partial to full shade is best; some sunlight is necessary to draw out the coloring. To protect the crowns and tender shoots in the spring, it is best to leave the old fronds on the plant over the winter.
